Ocean Adventures Day Camp Ages 12 – 18

Discover our local coastal environment while learning how to kayak and paddle board! Camp includes a Paddle Canada Basics Certificate to qualified kids. Come adventure with us.

Day Camp Itinerary

Monday: Kayaking Introduction & Tour to Chocolate Beach
8:30 am
Arrive at the Salt Spring Adventure Co. Ltd.
8:45 am
Introduction to kayak safety (gear uses, rules of the water, safety equipment). Gear up for kayaking and paddle talk, with a morning snack.
10:00 am
Kayak to Chocolate Beach, including stories and history about our islands and inter-tidal exploration.
11:30 am
Beach exploration and walk around the 3rd Sister Island, learning about what our surrounding Islands are that we can see, and lunch.
1:00 pm
Kayak back into Ganges Harbour, cleaning up the garbage we see on the water and exploring the shorelines. Stop at Churchill Beach for an afternoon snack and beach time.
3:30 pm
Paddle back to the Salt Spring Adventure Co. Ltd.
4:00 pm
Clean up time, putting away the gear of the day.
4:30 pm
Pickup at the Salt Spring Adventure Co. Ltd.

Tuesday: Paddle Canada Basics Course & Mt. Erskine Hike
8:30 am
Arrive at St. Mary’s Lake
8:45 am
Group A – Paddle Canada Course
(rafting up, forward stroke, reverse stroke, low brace, sweep stroke, draw stroke, edge control, stopping, lifts and carries, launching and landing, warm up and injury prevention, and communication: paddle signals, group form and discuss phones and radios)
Group B – Hike Mt. Erskine

Lunch break on the beach

Group B – Paddle Canada Course

Wednesday: Day Long Kayak Trip to Prevost Island & Marine Park
8:30 am
Arrive at the Salt Spring Adventure Co Ltd.
8:30 am
Kids learn about judgement and risk assessment (weather, speed distance travel, tides and currents at an introductory level). Kids prepare their own kayaks for the day, gearing up, refresher paddle talk, go over winds and tides of the day, discussing how that will affect the paddle. Planning a kayak route on a chart and discussing hazards in the environment. The group will decide on their roles for the day (head or stern paddler, safety monitor, gear inspector, etc.)
9:30 pm
Paddle to Prevost Island, James Bay
12:00 pm
Lunch break; heritage and the environment (leave no trace, history of kayakers being hunters, craft etc.)
1:30 pm
Paddle back to the Salt Spring Adventure Co Ltd., students choosing a new route and new role for the return journey.
4:00 pm
Kids will clean up the gear, checking for wear and tear. Debrief of the day and chosen route.

Thursday: Lake Day! Paddle Canada SUP & Kayak Rescue Course
8:30 am
Arrive at a local lake (TBA); kids and instructors setup equipment.
9:00 am
Group A – Paddle Board Instruction Class
Learning the basics of how to Paddle board, including the proper paddling techniques and safety procedures.
Group B – Kayak Rescue Course
Learning within their comfort zone, different rescue techniques to be able to rescue themselves and others in case of a capsize in double or single kayaks. Skills to learn: retrieving a swamped kayak (swimming a kayak to shore), assisted rescue (not solo), wet exiting, equipment and outfitting (gear), parts of the kayak.

Lunch on the beach
12:30 pm
Groups A and B switch activities from the morning

Free time with the kayaks and paddle boards, water games!
4:00 pm
Kids help load and clean gear and equipment

Friday: Zodiac Ride Exploration with Marine Biologist
8:30 am
Arrive at the Salt Spring Adventure Co. Ltd.; gear up for the day
9:00 am
Zodiac ride throughout the Salish Sea to look at our local marine mammals and birds (Sealions, Harbour Seals, porpoise/dolphins, Eagles, Herons, and more). Kids will work on a scavenger hunt to see how many local animals they can spot! Morning snack on the boat.
12:00 pm
Gear down and lunch on the beach at the Salt Spring Adventure Co Ltd.
1:00 pm
Go over the scavenger hunt n the beach and discuss all that we saw that morning.
1:30 pm
Meet up with our local Biologist to learn about our inter-tidal life, what is edible and medicinal, and learn about the environmental threats our local Ocean faces now and in the future. Walk beaches or docks, or even go to a Biologists Lab to see life up close!
3:30 pm
Create your own artistic message about what our environment has or needs! Use craft and natural material to create something beautiful, poetic or inspiring, to help educate our friends and families so we can create a brighter future for us all!
4:30 pm
End of Camp!

The program will change or adapt if needed due to unforeseen circumstances like weather, equipment issues, etc.


About the Salt Spring Adventure Co. Ltd.

We specialize in safe, fun, educational, and seamless adventure programs for youth and general groups, from 10 – 30 participants. Our attention to detail, ability to work on schedule, and fun and professional guides has earned our company an excellent reputation. As the Owner of Salt Spring Adventure Co. Ltd, Yvonne Poirier grew up in the woods and mountains of Western Alberta. From a young age, she enjoyed kayaking and camping; spending 9 years with Girl Guides of Canada, she developed leadership skills working with youth in outdoor adventure settings. Yvonne is a certified Assistant Overnight Guide with the Sea Kayak Guide Alliance of BC and Advanced Wilderness First Aid certified by Slipstream Wilderness. Yvonne is also certified with CPR-C Pro, Pleasure Craft Operators Card, Restricted Operators Maritime Certificate, Food Safe and Serving It Right. All our staff are Wilderness First Aid certified and are trained and Certified by the Sea Kayak Guides Alliance of British Columbia.
